As this R620 is used as a fire truck chassis, its cab configuration differs slightly from that of a standard highway logistics tractor. It uses the Scania CR16 single-row cab. Since this chassis is designed for a water-foam fire truck, a larger superstructure space is required to carry more water and foam, enhancing its rescue capabilities—making the single-row cab a wise choice.

The top of the cab features a windshield sun visor with LED position lights on both sides. A flat-roof cab was chosen to make it easier to install warning lights and other accessories.

The wide trapezoidal front grille sports the Scania badge, giving it a striking appearance. The intake grille is fitted with a honeycomb-style insect screen to protect the cooling system from insects and debris.

The R620 and V8 badges hint at its unique heart: a 16-liter V8 engine. The vehicle is well protected with a 3-section gray primed bumper that maintains aesthetic appeal even after minor scratches or bumps. The headlights are fitted with protective mesh to prevent damage in harsh environments. A robust metal anti-collision beam is also added to protect chassis components.

The cab uses a 4-point mechanical suspension system, which offers better reliability—an essential feature for firefighting tasks in challenging environments.

● Single-Row Cab: All About Practicality

While the R620 opts for a single-row cab for practical reasons, the interior isn’t stripped down—it still includes all essential features.

There are 2 anti-slip boarding steps, with the lowest step only 410mm from the ground, making entry and exit very convenient. The second step includes an auxiliary side-turning light to alert side and rear traffic. An engine start/stop switch and towing hook are located near the right step.

Both driver and passenger seats are air suspension seats with multi-directional adjustment and seatbelts integrated into the backrests—greatly reducing driver fatigue. The seats are covered in leather with fiber padding for breathability and comfort.

Instrument controls are integrated on both sides of the steering column. On the right: Differential lock, fuel heater, A/C, parking brake, main power switch, ground lighting, mirror heating. On the left: Exhaust brake, white smoke controller, headlight control, and headlight height adjustment. All buttons are positioned within easy reach for the driver.

The cab offers ample storage: Overhead compartments and storage between the driver and passenger seats for tools. Since there’s no sleeper bed, a storage box behind the seats can hold water bottles and miscellaneous items.

A sunroof at the top of the cab improves air circulation. Standard features also include power windows and heated electric side mirrors.

● V8 Engine + Intelligent Shifting: 620-Horsepower Beast

Since launching the 350-horsepower V8 engine in 1969, Scania’s V8 has become a symbol of heritage and pride.

The R620—also powered by a 16-liter V8—delivers a maximum 620 hp at 1,900 rpm and up to 3,000 Nm of torque between 1,100–1,400 rpm. It meets Euro IV emissions standards through SCR aftertreatment.

To handle this power, the fire truck is fitted with the GRSO905 12+2-speed automated manual transmission, with the gear lever mounted on the steering column. This design allows the driver to shift gears without removing their hands from the wheel. It features Scania’s Opticruise intelligent shifting system: a rotary switch for selecting drive, reverse, or neutral; a button for automatic/manual mode; and a gear selector for up/down shifting. The electronically controlled hydraulic clutch ensures smoother power delivery and easier operation.

To support power take-off for the fire truck superstructure, the chassis is pre-equipped with an OMKA 3000 full-power PTO, offering a continuous output of 250 kW and peak torque of 2,600 Nm.

The rear axle is a 16-ton dual-drive axle with a 4.38 ratio and lateral stabilizer bar, offering strong load capacity and mobility. The rear suspension consists of 4 parabolic leaf springs with shock absorbers, meeting onboard equipment demands.

The front axle is a 9-ton drive axle with a 3-leaf parabolic spring and shock absorber system for comfort. Both front axles include stabilizer bars to ensure vehicle stability during turns.

● Braking System: Designed for Urban Duty

Rather than using disc brakes or a mixed disc-drum system, this vehicle is equipped with full drum brakes and ABS. Auxiliary braking systems like EBS or retarders—common in highway tractors—are not included, as this fire truck is primarily used in urban areas where road conditions are relatively good. Drum brakes plus ABS are sufficient.

A smart APS air compressor management system and engine brake integration ensure excellent braking performance.

The fire truck’s wiring harnesses are neatly bundled and firmly secured. Pre-installed harnesses extend from the cab to the frame, making it easier for body manufacturers to complete superstructure conversions. All air tanks are mounted inside the chassis to free up additional space for fire-fighting equipment.
