● The Birth of the First Aerial Ladder Fire Truck
As early as 1872, Magirus invented a firefighting ladder mounted on a two-wheeled base, which can be considered the earliest prototype of the aerial ladder.
In 1892, Magirus created the world’s first 25-meter turntable ladder powered by a horse-drawn carriage. Thus began Magirus‘s journey as a pioneer in the fire-fighting industry!
● Joining Forces with Deutz to Create Miracles
Time marched on, and with the development of the German automotive industry, Magirus officially began producing vehicles in 1917. In 1936, it merged with the renowned Deutz engine factory.
With the help of Deutz engines, Magirus continued to expand in the fire truck market and, in 1951, manufactured what was then the world’s tallest aerial ladder truck at 52 meters.
Innovation has always been at the core of Magirus’s development:
- 1971: First road-rail dual-purpose rescue vehicle
- 1972: First large airport fire truck
- 1980: First aerial ladder truck with a low-entry cab
- 1986: First computer-controlled aerial ladder truck
● A Historic Turning Point: Founding IVECO Together
In 1975, Magirus reached a significant turning point when it joined forces with 4 other brands to form IVECO, now a well-known European commercial vehicle manufacturer.
By the late 1980s, the Iveco Magirus brand had officially become IVECO’s dedicated fire equipment division.
● Solving a Century-Old Problem
Thanks to its extensive experience and innovative technologies in aerial ladder fire trucks, Magirus has become a globally recognized name in the industry.
Especially in 2000, Magirus launched its electronic damping stabilization system, solving the long-standing problem of ladder swaying that had plagued firefighters for nearly a century.
● Advanced Technology Ensures Vehicle Stability
Aerial ladder fire trucks demand strict leveling. During operation, the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts with the height and direction of the ladder. If it exceeds the support range of the 4 outriggers, it could become hazardous.
IVECO Magirus uses a technology called “Vario” support legs, allowing the tires to always remain in contact with the ground and evenly distribute the vehicle’s weight. This ensures the vehicle stays balanced even on uneven terrain!
● A “Lifeline” for High-Rise Buildings
As buildings grow taller, aerial ladder fire trucks face greater challenges. Depending on the model, IVECO Magirus aerial ladder fire trucks can reach working heights ranging from 27 to 60 meters.
What does 60 meters mean? That’s roughly equivalent to a 20-story building!
IVECO Magirus trucks are also equipped with stretcher systems that can be horizontally extended to windows mid-air, safely retrieving injured individuals back to the ground.
