In 2025, a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck mounted generator 25kW prototype developed under the leadership of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) set a new Guinness World Record by continuously driving 1,806 miles (approximately 2,906.48 kilometers).
This prototype truck, named “H2Rescue,” covered the distance without refueling, breaking the record for the longest driving range in its category. Before the vehicle set off, a Guinness World Records adjudicator sealed the hydrogen tanks to ensure the authority of the record.
In recent years, the United States has experienced frequent natural disasters, driving a growing demand for specialized rescue vehicles capable of providing power, heating, water, and essential supplies. The “H2Rescue,” a 0-emission fuel-cell-powered emergency rescue fire truck, was developed in response to this urgent need.
Hydrogen fuel cells provide a clean and efficient energy solution for emergency response. They operate quietly, with water and heat as the only by-products. With an energy efficiency of up to 80%, they combine environmental protection with energy savings, offering a stable and reliable mobile power source in disaster response situations.
“H2Rescue” integrates an electric drive system, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen storage system, and high-energy-density lithium-ion battery to achieve 0-emission propulsion. The truck is equipped with a Cummins Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250-kilowatt traction motor.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, this advanced system allows the truck to function as a self-propelled generator, delivering 25 kilowatts of electricity—sufficient to power 20 households, a shelter, or a communications trailer. Its extremely low operating noise further makes it ideal for disaster relief operations.
Classified as a Class 7 heavy-duty truck, “H2Rescue” weighs about 33,000 pounds (15,000 kilograms) and complies with U.S. Department of Transportation road standards. It is fitted with a temperature-controlled van body that can serve as a mobile command center or emergency shelter. Notably, the fuel cell generates water during operation, which can be treated and used in critical situations.
The truck can carry up to 176 kilograms of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar, supporting long-duration rescue missions.
During the recent record-breaking journey, the truck carried 175 kilograms of hydrogen and consumed 168 kilograms along the way. Traveling from Oakland to West Sacramento, California, officials ensured that the hydrogen tanks remained sealed throughout the trip. On public roads, the truck drove at speeds of 80 to 89 km/h in ambient temperatures ranging from 16°C to 27°C.
The U.S. Department of Energy noted that replacing traditional emergency response vehicles with the “H2Rescue” truck mounted generator 25kW could save about 6,908 liters of gasoline annually and reduce 2.8 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
